Blood Function
64How does our Blood Function ?
The blood contains many different substances . Each of them has a special duty and significance . The liquid part of the blood is called Plasma, which constitutes a little more than half the total volume of blood. Proteins, antibodies, fibrinogens, carbohydrates, fats, salts etc. are some of the constituents of Plasma. There are two types of blood cells- the red cells or the red blood corpuscles and the white blood cells or the leucocytes.
The red cells give the blood its colour. There are so many of them in the blood that it all looks red.
There are about 35 billion of these tiny, round, flat discs moving around in our body.
They stay in the blood vessels all the time. The red blood corpuscles carry the oxygen through the arteries and capillaries to all cells of the body.
Though the red cells are by far more numerous in the blood, but the white blood cells or leucocytes have a critical role to play. The most common leucocytes are granular cells. These cells pass in and out of the blood to the spot where germs or injured tissues have collected. Some cells take bacteria into themselves and destroy them.
There are some white cells which are called lymphocytes. These cells help the body to fight infections . Still other white blood cells are the monocytes. These cells are the monocytes. These cells together with other cells in the tissues, have the ability to take up pieces of dead material.
They can also surround material such as dirt and keep it from coming in contact with healthy tissue cells.
While the white blood corpuscles are so important constituent of our blood, but too many of them are not good either. When too many of white blood cells are formed and they do not grow into the healthy active cells that are needed , such condition is called leukemia or cancer of the blood.
Thus, we see that blood is a complex combination of many substances. Each of them has its own importance and a imbalance in any of these could proove fatal for our body.
